How do we choose the most suitable M&E tools and approaches based on the initiative purpose, capacity and plans?

Reflecting for critical learning

The implementation of the various M&E tools, data collection, collation and analysis processes that are mentioned in this toolkit are not enough on their own. These tools need to be accompanied by regular discussions and reflections, turning monitoring information into learning for improvement and impact both at a project level and at an organisational level. You should work with your team to continuously critically learn and reflect throughout the project to make the necessary changes based on context changes, evidence and feedback from stakeholders. This is to support improved decision-making and adjusting the project with the intended results and outcomes in mind.

When it comes to reporting, it is important to ensure that reporting requirements are well understood upfront, to that you know you are collecting the right data and information to meet those requirements. It is also equally important to ensure that you also report back to all partners, stakeholders, beneficiaries, community members etc. and not just follow reporting requirements as per the donor requirements or the proposal. In addition, all stakeholders should have the opportunity to feedback back regularly and this feedback should be incorporated into your project’s reflection processes, thereby increasing your project’s accountability.
